Thomas Bach

Olympic Champion, Fencing

Dear President of the International Wushu Federation Gou Zhongwen,
Dear athletes, friends from the international wushu family,

As we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the International Wushu Federation, I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations to you, for reaching this important milestone for your sport.

You can look back with pride on your many achievements and developments, which already begun under your past president, my dear colleague and friend Mr. Yu Zaiqing. You have taken the great tradition of Chinese martial arts and brought it into the modern age, making wushu a sport with a truly global appeal today.

This extraordinary growth and development is no coincidence. It is the result of the unwavering commitment and constant work of the International Wushu Federation under the able leadership of President Gou.

You have always understood how to embrace change by continuing to develop sport in innovative ways, and to promote the role of sport in society.
This is why my thanks and gratitude go to the wushu family around the world for everything you do to spread our shared Olympic values of excellence, friendship, respect, and solidarity.

As you celebrate this important milestone today, you have every reason to be proud. And you have every reason to look to the future with great confidence. Because with the addition of Wushu on the program of the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026, the next milestone is already on the horizon.

In this Olympic spirit, I wish you all the very best for at least the next 30 years and beyond.

To All Wushu Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen,

The World Wushu-Kungfu Day, initiated by IWUF, is themed on “Celebrate IWUF’s 30th Anniversary Together: Share Wushu, Share Health. ” this year, and has kicked off a global celebration, calling on all wushu practitioners to remain united, healthy and vigorous.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the IWUF. With the passage of time, we have grown and developed through all sorts of difficulties and ordeals.

We have amassed significant achievements during this time. In the last few years, there has been close cooperation between wushu and the Olympics, from the “Beijing 2008 Wushu Tournament” and the “Nanjing 2014 Youth Wushu Tournament” successfully held respectively in conjunction with the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the Nanjing 2018 Youth Olympic Games,
to the present day when wushu has been included as an official event at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. We have witnessed the breathtaking historical moment when wushu became an official Olympic sport. The achievements of the past thirty years are a testament to the sweat and struggle of generations of wushu practitioners.

With this opportunity, I would like to extend my heartfelt respect and gratitude to those who have always been devoted to the development of wushu throughout the world.

Thirty years is another brilliant start for us. Especially in these unprecedented times of challenge and uncertainty, we need the sporting spirit of solidarity and diligence more than ever before.

I believe that under the leadership of the IWUF, and with the hard work of all wushu practitioners worldwide, we will forge ahead to usher in a new era for the development of the global wushu cause.

Finally, may wushu guard your health; may wushu be with the Olympics!
